Antique Market Tips & Tricks
A few tips and tricks for heading off to search for treasures at antique/flea markets. If you have any tips or tricks share them below in the comments, I would love to read them!
This coming weekend I am off on a road trip with my treasure hunting partner (my mom) to search for goodies for a few projects and of course the shop. I figured since I am getting ready to head out I should share what I do to prep and what I do once there.
The day of the market I head out early, because the early bird gets the worm. Since I start very early the temperature changes throughout the day making layers key. Be prepared to start with a sweater or long sleeves and be ready to end up in a t-shirt. A hat is also a good piece to have on hand because the sun basking on open fields can take its toll. Make sure you also have the right footwear. If the weather has been nice a good pair of sneakers will do, but if its raining or has been, bring your wellies!
Now besides just what to wear (comfort and layers are key) I also have a few other necessities that come with. A market tote to hold smaller treasures, collapsible wagon to haul your finds, water, a belt bag or crossbody, wipes, tape measure, and cash. Some markets accept cards but cash is key. In my car I also keep a tool kit if I need to take legs off a piece, kraft paper to wrap breakables, bungee cords, tarps and blankets.
Once at the market, cart in tow, I have a list at the ready of what I would like to find as well as measurements. Not only do I have the measurements for a piece or the space I am designing I also know the measurements of my car. Be sure to note the width, height, and length that you can pack into your car. The worse is finding a piece only to struggle getting it home. Some markets will have companies they can share to ship pieces, but do your own research and have a plan if you are looking for large pieces.
As I mentioned above I head out with a list in hand, but I also want to note it is important to keep an open mind. I always have specific pieces that I search for as well as a set style or term, such as old wood boxes, bentwood, architectural salvage… You may find just what you are looking for but don’t let that stop you from finding different treasures. Also, you may not find what you had hoped but you can always gain inspiration!
I hope this helps if you are heading out treasure hunting and if you have other tips or tricks share below.
